Pet travel: crate selection and other supplies

Pet Travel Crate

Cats typically aren't fond of traveling as they are uncomfortable in unknown places. To make the trip more enjoyable, bring along some of the comforts of home and other essentials including a pet travel crate, food and water feeders, a pillow or cat bed, cat nip, cat food, litter box, leash, collar and identification tag.

When it comes to pet travel, crate selection is key. After all, your cat will be housed in it for the duration of the trip. Find a travel crate that's spacious and will fit in your vehicle. Attract your cat to the crate by placing a pillow or cat bed inside it, and scatter some cat nip inside. Be aware that a crate is best for long trips; for short ones to a location neaby, try a cheap pet carrier. If you would like to spoil your bet at home or on trips try a luxury pet carrier.

Give your cat plenty of water throughout the trip to avoid dehydration. Supply water every hour or when pausing at a rest stop. A rest stop is a good spot for feeding too before getting back on the road, but make sure you keep your cat leashed if he leaves the crate. Take all precautions to prevent your cat from running off.

Speaking of running off, you'll certainly want to bring along a collar and identification tag in the event that your pet does take off. The collar is also necessary in order to attach the leash. All are crucial in making sure your cat stays at your side.

Opt for a cheap pet carrier

If travels with your cat are close to home (e.g. to the vet's office), your best bet would be to get a cheap pet carrier as opposed to a pet crate. Cat carriers come in various designs such as the wheeled carrier, front pet carrier or tote carrier. The wheeled carrier is designed with wheels, making it easy to push or pull. Many have convenient features that convert the carrier into a backpack, car seat or bed. Front pet carriers strap onto your torso and are a great fit for cats because of cats' small stature. Finally, the most stylish of pet carriers these days are carrier totes. Purse-like and ever-so-popular with today's celebrities, totes are available in a multitude of patterns, sizes and textures to suit your needs and the personality of your cat.
